Lickity Split Frozen Custard
Near-perfect: impeccable service, delicious custard, and extraordinary value. The grasshopper concrete with chocolate custard is a must-try.
Cows
Outstanding ice cream with inventive, playful names β Wowie Cowie and Gooey Mooey were revelations. Pure maple flavor, tons of walnut, and a crΓ¨me brΓ»lΓ©e cone. Exceptional.
Millie's
Old-fashioned Shadyside gem with phenomenal homemade waffle cones and chunky, flavor-forward ice cream. 8-person lines at 7 PM speak for themselves. $7, worth every penny.
Mary's Milk Bar
Possibly the best gelato we've ever had β impossibly light, smooth, and bursting with fresh flavors. Only ~10 flavors daily, but each one sings. The salted caramel is extraordinary.
Penn State Berkey Creamery
Penn State's legendary campus creamery. The ice cream itself is extraordinary β fresh, creamy, and incredibly well-priced. A quintessential college town experience.
Gelateria di Berna
Super smooth texture in a cute Zurich spot β a great date destination. Chocolate and amarena cherry combination was memorable. Samples available.
Oberweis
A solid all-around dairy experience. Oberweis delivers consistent quality across atmosphere, flavor, and value β a dependable choice.

A beloved Oakland institution that has since changed ownership. Thai iced tea and caramel Heath swirl in a homemade waffle cone for $5 β great value, smooth flavors, ~20 interesting choices.
Frosty's
Charming cottage-style stand with Perry's hard ice cream, soft serve, and great value. Wide variety of flavors, fun atmosphere. Let's Dough Buffalo was a highlight.
Grido Helado
Hopping with 12 people at 3:50 PM. Creamy, delicious helado with tiramisu, dulce de leche, and brownie. Light waffle cone, friendly service, great toppings selection.
Little Man Creamery
An iconic Denver landmark with a standout atmosphere and excellent ice cream. The experience alone is worth the price of admission β even if the value could be better.
Lappert's
32 flavors with a consistent tropical vibe β Hawaiian shirts, island music, and inventive flavors like Coconut Bliss and Kona Coffee Fudge Yogurt. Generous scoops at $4.95.
Sweet Cow
Solid ice cream at a fair price with a casual, welcoming vibe. A reliable neighborhood choice in Denver.
Annette's
The ice cream is genuinely outstanding, but the experience itself β a simple window β leaves room for improvement. Go for the scoops, not the ambiance.
Meyer Dairy
Homespun charm with incredible value β $4 for a double dip waffle cone. The maple walnut is a winner, though the cone falls apart. Great views and huge indoor seating.
Murphy's
Very friendly service in a clean, inviting shop with multiple Dingle locations. 12 flavors, samples available, and β¬6.50 for a scoop β a solid Irish ice cream stop.
Gelato Granucci
Upper-echelon presentation with uniformed staff speaking Italian. Creamy, natural gelato with appropriate flavor strength. PB&J and Pistachio were standouts.
Gelato Ladies
A lovely find in Tallinn's Old Town. The pistachio gelato was extraordinarily smooth with great flavor. Peach was a touch icy but delightfully homemade. Samples available, β¬5/2 scoops.
Scoops Bloomfield
The ice cream itself is exceptional β some of the best taste we've encountered. The experience falls short, but the scoops are worth seeking out.
Mizzica
Possibly the best gelato ever had. The dark chocolate tasted like a 70% cocoa bar in frozen form β not sweet, not bitter, just incredible. Wild Berry Cheesecake was a close second. Line out the door but worth every minute.
Milkshake Factory
A sleek, modern downtown Pittsburgh spot known for outrageously creamy milkshakes. The chocolate raspberry truffle is velvety smooth. Pricey but worth a visit.
Scooter's Frozen Custard
Good custard at a fair price. The experience could use a boost, but the flavor delivers where it counts.
Segreti
Beautiful, upscale space with indoor and outdoor seating. At 3:15 on a Saturday, there was no line and six other people in the shop. There were 24 flavors as well as drinks with port and espresso mixed with ice cream. The flavors were very strong and very smooth texture. There are no samples or water offered, and the space is a bit formal. There is no A/C.
Jeni's
Jeni's is known for its spectacular, innovative flavors β but the premium price tag makes the value hard to justify. Worth a try, not an everyday stop.
UDF
A Cincinnati dairy institution with better ice cream than its utilitarian atmosphere suggests. Great value, surprisingly good flavor.
Lizzy's
Good ice cream at a fair price, but the experience leaves something to be desired. Worth a stop for the scoops themselves.
Polar Bear
A modest roadside ice cream stand with decent value and average scoops. A reliable summer stop in the Poconos.
Freddo
Vibrant, modern shop packed at 11 PM with creamy, delicious flavors. Dulce de leche and passion fruit were standouts. Well-topped with standard toppings and dips.
Ghirardelli's
The chocolate brand's ice cream parlor delivers a nice atmosphere but only average scoops at a premium price.
Sweet Action
Creative, artisan ice cream flavors in a funky Denver setting. Good taste, middle-of-the-road experience and value.
Amy's
A beloved Austin institution with creative flavors and a fun atmosphere, but the value is a hard sell. Great taste, high price.
Sabores Cafe
This shop appears small from the outside, but has an expansive interior with plenty of seating. No water or samples offered. They have 20 flavors as well as a big menu of smoothies, milkshakes, sundaes, and coffee. Unfortunately, the flavors were not vibrant and the texture was a bit icy. But the weather was so hot, we didn't mind!
LaScola's Italian Ice and Custard
Below-average experience and middling flavors. The Italian ice and custard didn't meet expectations.
University of Maryland Creamery
Campus creamery with a loyal following, but service felt rushed and unprofessional. Out of waffle cones during our visit. The Jack's and Legacy One flavors showed potential.
Yo Cherry Hamilton
Average flavors with unremarkable creaminess β felt like a supermarket brand. The shop itself lacks charm. 32 hard ice cream flavors plus frozen yogurt by weight, but nothing memorable.
Corneto
Heavy rum flavor overwhelms everything, artificial strawberry, terrible cones β this one missed badly. 8 flavors, 5β10 minute wait, no samples or water.
Vinny's
28 flavors spanning Italian ice, ice cream, and gelato β but a grainy, icy texture let us down. Friendly service and potential worth noting.
Special Gelato
Margie's Candies
A historic Chicago candy and ice cream parlor with timeless charm. Known for their sundaes. Full review coming soon.
